How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets

Painting your kitchen cabinets is an effective and economical solution to refresh your kitchen at a low cost. Although it is quite possible to do this work yourself, it is easier to hire a house painter to do the job.

At Peintres Premium, we paint kitchen cabinets professionally and with the best products on the market. If you want to paint your existing kitchen cabinets, here are the tips from our experts.

1. Mark and remove your kitchen cabinets

Before you start painting your interior room, it is recommended that you remove your cabinet doors and mark their location so that you can identify them later. Set a number or code for your doors and drawers using letters or numbers. This simple technique will allow you to assemble your kitchen at the end of your project without making mistakes.

Here are some tips to help you find your way around:

● Identify each kitchen cabinet with a specific number or code

● Remove the cabinets and the drawers

● Move the kitchen furniture to a different room

2. Prepare the surface

Before renovating your kitchen cabinets with paint, you need to prepare the surface of it in order to apply the paint properly. Use a TSP E degreaser to prepare the surface. This product removes dirt without leaving any residue. After application, rinse with clear water and a clean sponge and let air dry.

After cleaning your cabinets, it’s time to sand them. Most cabinet finishes are too course for the new primer and paint to adhere properly. Use a medium grit sandpaper (preferably 100-150). Be careful not to completely remove the existing finish. The goal is to make the surface slightly rough so that the primer can hold. Then wipe off any dust with a slightly damp cloth and let dry.

3. Protect your surrounding area and surfaces

To avoid getting paint splatter everywhere, you should protect all of the surfaces and edges. You can use canvas, tarps, cardboard or any other protective material.

At Peintres Premium, we take care to protect your entire home, from the floor to the ceiling. Our house painters protect your property when we carry out any painting project.

4. Use a primer

After sanding and protecting your kitchen cabinets, it’s time to apply a first coat of primer. This product forms the basis of a painting project and helps prepare the surface by masking any stains.

Once applied, the primer must dry for at least 24 hours.

5. Sand the kitchen cabinets

Once your primer is dry, you can start sanding again. This time, use 220-grit sandpaper to lightly sand all surfaces of your cabinets. Try to focus on areas where the primer may have run or built up, especially in the corners and on various edges. Remember to use a clean, moist sponge to remove all excess dust and particles then let the surface air dry.

6. Paint the kitchen cabinets

You can start painting your kitchen cabinets now that the surfaces of the cabinets and drawers are ready. To save time, we recommend using a foam roller instead of a brush. Just like the primer coat, allow the first coat of paint to dry before proceeding with the rest of the restoration.

For an even better application on your kitchen cabinets, our professional painters use spray guns with a smooth finish nozzle. This technique allows for an exceptional finish on your kitchen cabinets.

Once the first coat of paint has dried, paint your kitchen cabinets with a second coat of paint to obtain a uniform finish.

7. Allow the paint to dry

The more time the paint has to dry, the more durable the final result of your repainting project will be. Allow the cabinets to dry using a fan to ventilate the area for at least 24 hours. Once everything is completely dry, you can reassemble the cabinets in your newly refreshed kitchen.
